A Kanyakumari receives ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ Award


On 24th July 2016 A Kanyakumari received the ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ Award. She became the first-ever women to fetch this award. The award was announced by MMA (Madras Music Academy). The Academy’s Executive Committee unanimously selected her for 2016 award. This award will be given on 1st January 2016 at Sadas. Rudrapatnam Brothers will receive the SKA (Sangita Kala Awards). Training Avasarala Kanyakumari hails from Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayanagaram. She is a Carnatic music specialist. Her initial training was under Ivaturi V Rao. She has created 7 ragas under title ‘Saptadri’.


Modern artist from India SH Raza dies


On 23rd July 2016, famous artist Syed H. Raza died. He was of 94 years age. Raja was known across the globe for his unique abstract paintings. He made use of very rich colors. His portraits were stocked with Indian cosmology icons. His paintings were also philosophical in nature. He is regarded as India’s most renowed art painter of the modern era. His works were mostly acrylic or oil based. Since 1950, he work and lived in France. He married Janine Mongillat, a French artist in 1959. Janine died of cancer in 2002. He returned India after her death. His work ‘Saurashtra’ fetched INR 16.42 crore. He received Padma Shri award in 1981.


Virat Kohli scores double century


Virat Kohli, captain of Indian test team scored double century on 22nd July 2016. He became the 1st Indian test captain to score double century at a foreign land. Against West Indies, Kohli scored double century at the SVR stadium. He is also among top 5 highest scorer visiting captain in WI. The other 4 are Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Strauss and Leonard Hutton. This was Kohli’s highest test cricket and first-class cricket score.


Tomorrowland (Annual electronic music festival) takes off in Belgium


On 22nd July 2016, Tomorrowland took off in Belgium. It is an annual (electronic) music festival. It is among the biggest global music festivals. This year will be the festival’s 10th edition. Almost 350000 tickets were sold during the first hour of ticket opening in 2016 February. Festival’s first edition was held on 14th August 2005. ID&T from Belgium organised the event. Since 2012, Tomorrowland has won IDM awards. The category is ‘Best Music Event’. It also grabbed the RBEA (Red Bull Electropedia Awards) in 2013, 2012 and 2011.


Brahmaputra VFF 2016 starts in Guwahati


Brahmaputra VFF (Valley Film Festival) 2016 started in Guwahati. It was the 4th edition and commenced on 22nd July 2016. The festival recognises the rich north-eastern Indian culture. The festival is a dedication to the region’s film fraternity. It will be a three day fest. During the fest 6 full length and 6 short films will be presented. These films will be from Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and AP. Tattva Creations organised the fest. The objective of this festival is bridging the gap. It is done by bringing together engaging storytellers and narrators from outside and within the region. It is also an opportunity for new filmmakers to learn. The first festival was held in 2013.
