Introduction: The biggest employer in India is having 17 zones. These zones are managed by the Recruitment Board. The boards recruit technical and non-technical staff through the recruitment exam as per the syllabus fixed according to the positions.  Some posts come under the Union Public Service Commission, and some posts comes under the Railway Recruitment Boards. The boards further divided into the zones. The positions are based under groups like Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D.


Group ‘A’ Posts: Group A services



  • Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers

  • India Railway Service of Electrical Engineers

  • India Railway Service of Signal Engineers

  • Indian Railway Store Service

  • Indian Railway Medical Service


  • India Railway Accounts Service

  • India Railway Personnel Service

  • Post of Assistant Security Officer; Group ‘A’ in railway Protection Force

  • Railway Board Secretariat Service, Group ‘B’ (Section Officers’ Grade)

  • The posts/positions come under these services appointed by union public service commission through Civil-Service Examination, Engineering Service Examination, and Combined Medical Examination. We will discuss in detail later for all the competitive exams.


    Group ‘B’ Posts: Group B posts are not directly recruited, actually these posts are upgraded posts from Group ‘C’ posts, and the Group ‘C’ posts are managed as follows.


    Group ‘C’ Posts: Group ‘C’ posts are categorized into technical and Non-Technical staff like Assistant Station Masters, Drivers, Motormen, Guards, Signal and Mechanical Inspectors. So these staffs recruits by the railway recruitment boards. There are total 19 railway recruitment boards.


    Technical Cadre Examination: There are lots of posts, which come under the technical cadres in railway like station master, signal and mechanical inspectors, motormen and drivers. So, all these positions are required special qualification and training. So, railway appoints technical staff by its different written examination from non-technical staff. Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) held written exams and interview to recruit technical staff in different zones. RRBs issued recruitment notification/advertisement in varied newspapers and official website to announce open vacancies. We are here do same work to update you regarding the various recruitment projects.


    Non-Technical Cadre Examination: Technical staff is not only the need of railway. All works like ticket collection, ticket issuing, accounts works, file management and various administration works handle by non-technical works. So, different RRBs appoint non-technical staff through competitive exams. They issue recruitment notification in employment newspaper and on its official websites. The posts come under non-technical staff like clerks, typist, stenographers and cashier.


    Group ‘D’ Posts: Group ‘D’ posts include porter, Gateman, parcel porter, helper, track-man, Safaiwala, Gangman, Khalasi, peon in various departments like traffic, civil engineering, mechanical, electrical and S& T. RRBs appoint group D posts through Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and written test. The basic qualification for these posts is a class 10th standard.
