India & Bangladesh ink deals
On 12th July 2016, India inked an important deal with Bangladesh. The deal was construction of RPS (Rampal Power Station), a 1320 MW coal-fired power plant. This will be the largest project within this bilateral arrangement. BHEL signed this deal with BIFPCL (Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited), a joint-venture enterprise. BHEL was selected for this agreement during an open (international) tender. BHEL will be constructing a STP (super thermal plant) at Southwest Rampal, Bangladesh. India will provide USD 1.49 Billion for this project. Power generation from this project is expected from 2019.
Health Ministry launched Nationwide IDCF (Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight)
Health Ministry launched Nationwide IDCF (Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight) on 11th July 2016. The programme will aim to reduce diarrhoea induced infant mortality. JP Nadda (Minister- Health & Family Welfare) launched the scheme. It is launched nationwide. Every hour minimum 13 children die due to diarrhoea in India. Zinc and ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) were administered to children during this 15-ay programme. Over 2 million children were given the administration during this programme. The objective is to cover minimum 80% of the affected children population. ASHA workers administered the ORS. Families will be also counselled on ORS preparation and benefit.
SBI and IIT Bombay inks MoU
SBI (State Bank of India) and IIT Bombay inked MoU for promotion of fintech start-ups. The objective is to promote start-ups in financial sector. The MoU is between SBI and IITB-SINE (Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) is IITB’s business incubator. It will also ensure early funding for SINE-start-ups after evaluation. SBI will give platform for pilot testing of applications or products developed by fintech start-ups. It will also validate for business linkages. SINE will provide information on innovation impact, technical competency etc. for SBI funding. Funding will be on merit and case basis. IITB research community and SBI will have regular interactions for funding and validation.
‘Ringside with Vijender’ released
Rudraneil Sengupta on 8th July 2016 released his book titled ‘Ringside with Vijender). Juggernaut Books published the book. The book talks about the life of Vijender Singh. Singh is an Olympics medallist. This book talks about his transition into the pro-boxing world. It also shares his struggles, boxing style changes, personal life and training. Boxing Coach GS Sandhu coached Vijender. He won bronze at the Doha Asian Games 2016. He defeated Ecuador’s Carlos to win bronze at the Beijing Olympics 2008. He became a professional boxer in 2015. Rudraneil is Lounge’s deputy editor. Lounge is Mint’s weekly magazine. He received RG (Ramnath Goenka) award in 2008.
Forbes releases ‘World’s Highest-Paid Celebrities’ list
Forbes released ‘World’s Highest-Paid Celebrities’ list 2016 on 11th July 2016. Factors such as Google hits, income, press clips etc. are taken into consideration. Taylor Swift topped the list with USD 170 million earnings. One Director (Music Band) was 2nd with USD 110 million earnings. James Patterson (Author) came third with USD 95 million earnings. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were 4th and 8th in the list. Akshay Kumar and Shahrukh Khan were Bollywood entry in the list.
