Supercomputer for monsoon forecasting to be used by IMD


IMD will be using supercomputers for forecasting yearly summer monsoon of India. The announcement came from MoES (Union Ministry of Earth Sciences). IMD (India Meteorological Department) said the model will be used from 2017 onwards. The supercomputer is based on DMM (Dynamic Monsoon Model). It is also termed as CFS (Couples Forecast System). Here both global & local weather patterns data are collected. Then a forecast is made for a particular duration. IITM (The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology), Pune has used this model for 10 years. It has been used for experimental basis. The model is about 60% accurate as of now. It can reach an accuracy level of 77% in near future. At present IMD is using ESM (the ensemble statistical model) for predicting monsoon.


Rajya Sabha passed C&F Fund Bill


On 28th July 2016, Rajya Sabha passed the CAF (Compensatory & Afforestation Fund) Bill, 2016. It allows the state to gain control of INR 42000 crore for afforestation projects. Lok Sabha passed the bill on 3rd May 2016. The bill will establish the NCA (National Compensatory Afforestation) Fund. The fund will be under India Public Account. Payments will be for compensatory afforestation and NPV of forests. It will be utilised for forest cover loss, regeneration, wildlife protection & many more. It will also be used for forest infrastructure development.


Joint Military Exercise ‘Maitree’ concludes


The Joint Military Exercise ‘Maitree’ finished on 29th July 2016. The joint exercise was between Thailand and India. It took place at Thailand. The exercise started on 15th July 2016. It commenced under the guidance of the RTA (Royal Thailand Army). The objective was training both armies CTOs (counter terrorism operations) across urban environments. This was a two week exercise. 90 soldiers participated from RTA and Indian Army. It included weapon familiarization, combined training and usage of equipment. Also, skills such as analysing groupings and operational tactics were taught.


TVSN Prasad- committee formed


On 26th July 2016, a 7-member committee named TVSN Prasad- committee was formed. The committee was formed by Rajnath Singh (Union Home Minister). The objective was to explore possible pellet gun alternatives. Joint Secretary TVSN Prasad is the chairperson. He is the JS of Police Modernisation. It will submit a report in two months. The committee was formed on the backdrop of pellet guns usage on crowd. Crowds were blinded & fatally injured after CPRF used these in Kashmir. Pellet guns have lead balls loaded in them. It is in use since 2010.


MCB Trust unlocks for public


MCB (Madras Crocodile Bank) Trust celebrated 40 years public opening ceremony. It is also known as Croc Bank. It is an environmental, non-government organisation. Romulus Whitaker founded the organisation in 1976. It is a big reptile park nearby Chennai area. It also consists of many field projects across the subcontinent. It has 17 different crocodile species. It also houses species such as iguanas, tortoises and turtles. They have a 17 feet long salt-water crocodile named Jaws III. It weighs around 700 kg. It is the biggest captive crocodile in India.
