India & the US inked USD 1 Billion deal
On 27th July 2016, India & the US inked deal. The deal was for procurement of 4 Poseidon-8I aircraft. The deal was signed for USD 1 Billion. India will procure from Boeing. The aircrafts will be for maritime surveillance & anti-submarine warfare. First aircraft will reach India in fifty months. The agreement was inked while Frank Kendall’s (US under-secretary) India visits. This new deal is the follow-on order of a similar deal in 2009. This agreement will enhance defence ties with US & India.
Michel Barnier appointed as CBN (Chief Brexit Negotiator)
On 27th July 2016, Michel Barnier was appointed as EC-CBN (European Commission- Chief Brexit Negotiator). The selection was made by EU executives. Michel was formerly French FSC (Financial Services Commissioner). The decision came after UK Chief Negotiator resigned from his bloc. His selected was made as per the EUT (European Union Treaty) Article 50. He will act as main negotiator over Britain’s union exit. EU appointed Didier Seeuws (Belgian Diplomat) as Brexit Head. Michel is VP of EPP (European People Party). In 2010, he was appointed as EC for IMS (Internal Market & Services).
Olympic Channel to be launched by IOC
On 27th July 2016, it was announced that an Olympic Channel will be launched. The launch will be done by IOC (International Olympic Committee). The launch date for channel is set on 21st August 2016. This will be during the Rio Olympic Games 2016 closing ceremony. Initially, the channel will feature elite athletes in long-form and short-form content. The focus will be the path for success of these athletes. It will also feature sports across the globe. It is a multiplatform global digital-first platform. The objective is broadcasting Olympic Movement & its values round the year. It will also present live events, original programming, highlights & news.
Lok Sabha passed BTPA Bill, 2015
On 27th July 2016, Lok Sabha passed the BTPA (Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment) Bill, 2015. This bill will amend the 1988 BTA (Benami Transactions Act). This bill bans benami transactions & delivers for confiscation of benami properties. The objective of this new bill is to amend the benami transactions meaning. It will also create adjudicating authorities & an Appellate Court. This court will look into benami transactions. The bill also specifies benami transactions’ penalties. Four authorities have been specified for conducting inquiries. These are Approving Authority, Initiating Officer, Adjudicating Authority and Administrator.
WHD (World Hepatitis Day) 2016 observed
The WHD (World Hepatitis Day) 2016 was observed on 28th July 2016. It was celebrated across the globe with theme Elimination. This day is a global platform for raising awareness regarding hepatitis. It also promotes real changes across disease prevention, treatment & testing. The theme focuses on eliminating Hepatitis from globe by 2030. The theme is adaptable to local languages. It can be further used for achieving greater awareness & increased diagnosis across global platform. WHS (World Hepatitis Summit) will take place for three days in 2017. It will be from 29th March-31st March 2017. The event will take place in Brazil.
