WII to house Tiger repository
The WII (Wildlife Institute of India) announced establishing its 1st Tiger repository. The announcement came during August 2016 first week. The repository will be under the WII’s newly built Tiger Cell. It is also the 1st ever tiger repository in India. The inauguration of Tiger Cell was done on 6th August 2016. The NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority) will fund this Tiger Cell. NTCA is a statutory arm under the Ministry of Environment. Dehradun-based WII boasts about 23000 tiger images. The Tiger Cell will be maintaining these images. The Cell will help in assisting the tiger population, wildlife forensics, law enforcement etc. It will also oversee infrastructural development & mitigation and smart patrolling. It will help as an advisory during policy formulation.
Anand Sinha appointed to IDFC Bank’s board
Anand Singh was elected to the IDBI Bank’s Board on 6th August 2016. He is a former RBI DG (Deputy Governor). Anand will act as Additional Director effective from 1st August 2016. He was appointed after resignation of Vinod Rai. Rai served for about a year. Rai served as Nominee Director and represented IDFC limited. Rai is a former CAGI (Comptroller & Auditor General of India).
Katie Ledecky (Swimmer) sets world record
Katie Ledecky (American swimmer) on 7th August 2016 won gold at the 400m freestyle. With this gold, she established a new world-record. The event is a part of the ongoing Rio Olympics. She clocked 3 mins & 56.46 seconds and won over Jazmin Carlin of Britain. Carlin clocked 4 mins & 1.23 secs to grab the second place. Leah Smith from America won the Bronze medal. She clocked 4 mins & 1.92 secs. Katie has won Olympic Gold two times. She currently holds record in 1500-meter, 800-meter and 400-meter freestyle. He debuted in Summer Olympics 2012 wherein she clocked Gold.
Rajya Sabha passed MHC (Mental Health Care) Bill, 2013
On 8th August 2016, Rajya Sabha passed the MHC (Mental Health Care) Bill, 2013. This bill will repeal the MHA (Mental Health Act), 1987. The bill was passed with 134 amendments. A person with any mental illness will be provided with mental health services and care. It also has a provision for promotion, protection and fulfilling the rights of these people. The State and Central MHAs will have to follow the directives mentioned in the bill. All MHEs will have to be registered as per state of central MHAs. For registration, the criteria in the bill should be fulfilled.
Sandeep Kumar selected as Delhi Transport Commissioner
On 8th August 2016, Sandeep Kumar was selected as Delhi Transport Commissioner. He will be succeeding Sanjay Kumar. Sanjay was selected as the DTC some months ago. At present, Sandeep is looking into VIB (Village Industries Board) & Delhi Khadi MD. He will take the role of DTC as an additional role. Sandeep is IAS officer of 1997 batch. Sanjay is currently on leave. Before leaving, he signed the PBP (Premium Bus Policy). This policy was signed without Najeeb Jung’s (Delhi LG) approval.
