Scientists from Iceland convert carbon dioxide into Stone


Scientists from Iceland discovered a technique for capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) popularly known as greenhouse gas, by turning the gas into rock deep underground. This technique will be providing a faster and safer way to reposes carbon dioxide and limit the global warming due to this. This discovery has turned out to be extremely significant way in combating current climate change. The discovery was done under the CarbFix Project and was released on 10th June 2016 in the Science Journal. This method involving speedy carbonation can be extremely viable method for storing carbon dioxide permanently underground and without any leakage risk.


Union Minister for Railway initiates CSE (Champaran Satyagrah Express) at Motihari


On 10th June 2016, Suresh Prabhu (Union Railway Minister) gave a go ahead to the weekly CSE (Champaran Satyagrah Express) at Motihari area of Bihar. During this occasion, six railway facilities were inaugurated by the Railways Minister. The first facility included three ROBs (Road Over Bridges) at the Motihari, Danapur (Patna) and Begusarai railway stations. The second facility was BG (Broad Gauge) conversion of the Banmankhi-Purnea railway section. The third facility to be included was conversion of Piprahan station to crossing station. This CS express train was initiated to mark hundred years completion of the significant Champaran Satyagraha initiated in 1917. It was India’s first satyagrah.


Saina Nehwal wins the AOSS (Australian Open Super Series) Badminton trophy


On 12th June 2016, Ace shuttler from India Saina Nehwal grabbed the AOSS (Australian Open Super Series) Badminton trophy in women’s category. The event took place in Sydney. Saina defeated Sun Yu from China in the final round to lift the trophy. The award prize that Saina won for this trophy was US Dollars 56250. This was Saina’s 2nd AOT (Australian Open Title); the first one was won by her in 2014. Apart from the above prize money, Saina will also be receiving Rupees 10 lakhs as reward money from the BAI (Badminton Association of India) for winning this Super Series Tournament.


Legendary Ice-hockey player Gordie Howe dies


On 10th June 2016, Legendary Ice-hockey player Gordie Howe died after a long illness. Gordie was 88 years old. Gordie had a popular nickname ‘Mr. Hockey’ and is considered as one of greatest Ice-Hockey player ever. Born in the year 1928, Gordie spent his childhood in Gordie. He had a total of 26 NHL (National Hockey League) as well as 6 WHA (World Hockey Association) in his kitty. He took his retirement in 1971.


Inder Malhotra, veteran journalist passes away


On 11th June 2016, Inder Malhotra, veteran journalist passed away. Inder was 86 years old. Malhotra was the The Statesman’s (resident) editor in Delhi. He served at this post from 1965 till 1971. During this period, he was also The Guardian’s Indian Correspondent. He was also TOI (Times of India) editor from 1978 till 1986. From 1986 onwards, Malhotra had been writing columns for various periodicals and dailies in India as well as abroad. He also authored Indira Gandhi’s personal and political biography in 1991.
