LK Bhattacharyya, an Indian-origin professor, awarded with Regius Professorship
On 7th June 2016, LK Bhattacharyya was awarded with the famed Regius Professorship. Bhattacharya is a professor of Indian-origin and founded by WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group) at the Warwick University. He was given this prestigious award by the Queen of England. LK (Lord Kumar) Bhattacharyya is also a noted government advisor and an educator. He took over as the professor of MS (Manufacturing Systems) at the Warwick University during 1980. He is an IIT, Kharagpur alumni and received his MSc in EPM (Engineering Production and Management) from Birmingham University. He also boasts An EP (Engineering Production) PhD
Two-year suspension for Maria Sharapova for failed drug test
On 8th June 2016, Maria Sharapova received a suspension from Tennis for two years. The suspension came from ITF (the International Tennis Federation) because of usage of a drug that was prohibited. Her suspension period will be from 26th January 2016. Maria Sharapova, who plays for Russia, was banned from the Australian Open in 2016 March after she was tested positive for the banned drug Meldonium. Meldonium is a drug that modulates the metabolism and is prohibited under the WADA list of Prohibited drugs. Her Australian Open 2016 results will be disqualified with her ranking as well as the prize money won as the event.
India-US signed 8 MoUs for improving sustainable development and economic growth
On 8th June 2016, Unites states and India agreed upon 8 MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) for improving sustainable development and economic growth across the two nations. The agreements included various fields such as Energy Security cooperation, climate Change, Terrorist screening and clean energy etc. The event took place at the White House in the presence of President of US Barack Obama and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. The MoUs were finalized between the Defense Ministry of Indian Government and the Defense department of the US. Apart from the Agreement signing, both leaders also issued a statement wherein India will be recognized as a defense partner by the US.
Union Government introduces IYA (International Yoga Award) Scheme
On 8th June 2016, Union Government of India introduced a landmark IYA (International Yoga Award) Scheme. This award scheme has been introduced with the objective of promoting yoga across the nation. AYUSH Ministry has been designated with the task and the awards will be presented from 2017 onwards. SY Naik, AYUSH State Minister launched the plan during the NHE (National Health Editor’s) Conference. The conference was held to educate yoga benefits to the larger audiences.
Internet Saathi, a Tata and Google joint-initiative, launches in WB
On 8th June 2016, Tata Trust and Google jointly launched a new initiative named Internet Saathi in Kolkata, WB. The objective of this initiative is to reduce the gender gap in terms of digital knowledge across rural areas in the nation. For instance, in Purulia girls are now trained in terms of internet usage and also motivated to teach others. So far, this initiative is successfully running across 5 states and recently started in 4 more states. The bigger objective of this initiative is to empower women as well as their communities by educating them about benefits and usage of internet.
