2016 IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) Awards presented


2016 IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards were presented on 22nd June 2016. It was IIFA’s 17th year. The event took place in Spain. IIFA awards are given to honor the best Hindi movies. The best film was given to Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Sanjay L. Bhansali received best director for his film Bajirao Mastani. For the same film, Ranveer Singh grabbed the best actor award. Furthermore, Deepika Padukone won best actress award for Piku. Similarly, Vicky Kaushal won best debutant male award for Masaan. Additionally, Bhumi Pednehar won the best debutant female award for DLKH (Dum Laga Ke Haisha).


Chile wins 2016 CAF (Copa America Football) tournament


Chile won the 2016 CAF (Copa America Football) tournament on 26th June 2016. In the final match, Chile defeated Argentina by 4-2 during the penalties shootout. The match was played at the MetLife Stadium. This was Chile’s 2nd American title after 2015. Apart from the Copa Award, various other awards were recognized for both teams and individuals. Alexis Sanchez from Chile received the Golden Ball award. Similarly, Eduardo Vargas from Chile won the Golden Boot award. Also, Claudio Bravo from Chile grabbed the Golden Glove trophy. Additionally, Argentina received the Fair Play trophy. Copa America was previously known as SAFC (South American Football Championships).


Sanjay Malik appointed as Nokia India Head


Sanjay Malik was appointed as Nokia India Head on 24th June 2016. He will assume this position from 1st August 2016. Nokia is a multinational firm from Finland established in 1865. Malik’s overall responsibility will be leading customer operations. Furthermore, he will be driving business growth strategies across the nation. Additionally, he will be looking into engagement services for superior customer satisfaction. He will be working from Gurgaon office. Malik will be succeeding Sandip Girotra who held this position since 2011. Malik is presently heading NI (Network Implementation) division of Nokia. Malik has uniquely handled the growth of Nokia operations. He is also credited for giving strong performances in revenue efficiency.


India became 35th full-time member of MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime)


India became the 35th full-time member of MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime) on 27th June 2016. The entry will benefit India in enhancing its global non-proliferation schemes. The membership was signed by S Jaishankar (Foreign Secretary). Additionally, this became India’s first-ever entry to MECR (Multilateral Export Control Regime). India’s membership in this group was previously obstructed by Italy. Overall, membership with MTCR will permit India to purchase advanced missile technologies. Furthermore, it will also enhance India’s joint-ventures with Russia.


After Nine years, Panama Canal re-opened


Newly renovated Panama Canal was reopened on 26th June 2016 for larger businesses. Chinese-owned container vessel CSP (Cosco Shipping Panama) was the first one to cross after reopening. The Panama project started in 2007. This expanded reopening of Panama Canal was delayed for almost 2 years. Overall reasons behind this delay were cost overruns, construction delays and labour strike. Altogether, it is expected that the project will enhance port demands for handling ships.
