‘World Oceans Day’ celebrated across the globe
On 8th June 2016, the world celebrated the ‘World’s Oceans Day’. Theme for this day was Healthy oceans and healthy planet. With this theme, the focus for this year’s celebration will be curbing the enormous plastic population across the world oceans. Plastic pollution has become a dangerous threat to the oceans. Their degradation rate is very slow which pollutes the waterways continuously. Apart from this, plastic pollution also affects the aquatic animal health because animals as well as zooplankton eat micro beads which are mistaken as food. Thereby, it also impacts the health of humans who eat these sea animals. During this event, the UN also recognizes photographers through AWODOP (Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo) competition held at UN headquarters.
Himachal Pradesh launches first-ever green-concept based STC (State Data Centre)
On 5th June 2016, Himachal Pradesh launched it’s first-ever green-concept based STC (State Data Centre). With this, it also became the first state in India to launch such a program. The STC was launched in Shimla by the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Virbhadra Singh. This SDC’s design uses green data-center concept. This data center will also be offering 101 people-oriented schemes in online mode through this integrated database system. The total expenditure of this program was Rupees 58 crore. The websites from various departments will be integrated in the system.
World’s 100 MPW (Most Powerful Women) List for 2016 released
On 6th June 2016, Forbes released World’s 100 MPW (Most Powerful Women) List for 2016. The list included women who significantly impacted the media, businesses, politics, philanthropy and more. The four metrics that were used for preparing the list were media presence, money, impact and influence. Angela Merkel (German Chancellor) topped the list this year. She has been topping this list for the past six years. Second and third position was given to Hillary Clinton (US Presidential Candidate) and Janet Yellen (Federal Reserve Chair). The automobile section was topped by Marry Barra (General Motors CEO). Oprah Winfrey, popular personality stood in the 21st position. The newcomers that joined the list this year included two philanthropists, two billionaires, company chairpersons, five CEOs and US SC justices.
Shahid Rasool appointed as CEMCA (Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia) Director
On 7th June 2016, Shahid Rasool who is a known communication technology expert was elected as the CEMCA (Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia) Director. Shahid will be guiding CEMCA in it ‘objective of ensuring the efficient usage of educational resources and media for distance-education programs. Before this, Rasool acted as EMRC (Educational Multimedia Research Centre) Director, Kashmir University. He has a Communication Technology Master’s Degree and doctorate in Journalism and Mass Communication. CEMCA is a part of Vancouver-based COL (Commonwealth of Learning) with its headquarters in Delhi. It was established in the year 1994. The objective of establishing this program was putting a bigger focus on the distance education system. CEMCA works across 8 nations: India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Maldives, Brunei Darussalam, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
