Gangetic-River Dolphin declared as Guwahati ‘city animal’
On 6th June 2016, Guwahati became the first city across the Indian nation to declare its own mascot or ‘city animal’. The mascot chosen by the KM (Kamrup Metropolitan) District Administration is Gangetic-River Dolphin. Locally called as ‘Sihu’, the number of these dolphins has become limited to around 2000 across the Brahmaputra River in the state of Assam. The mascot was chosen through an off-line and online voting system organized by district administration. The three creatures included in the competition were Bor Kaso (Black Softshell Turtle), Hargila (Hreater Adjutant Stork) and Sihu (Gangetic River Dolphin), all of whom are quickly becoming extinct.
Dia Mirza chosen SSP (Swachh Saathi Programme) Ambassador
On 6th June 2016, Dia Mirza was selected as the brand ambassador for SSP (Swachh Saathi Programme). It is an internship program for students and is a part of the SBM (Swachh Bharat Mission) scheme. Dia Mirza was chosen for this position as Dia is a popular youth icon as well as an active Swachh Bharat campaigner. Her position as brand ambassador will help in connecting to more youths and make them a part of the program. Her position will involve meeting with college and school students across the nation through community cleaning programmes, awareness sessions as well as motivational videos.
DNWF (Draft National Water Framework) Bill, 2016 released
On 16th May 2016, the Ministry of Union for Water Resources released a draft bill named DNWF (Draft National Water Framework) Bill, 2016. It has been released for public suggestions and comments. This proposed act will ensure a national legal scheme with strict principles for conservation, regulation, management and protection of water and will treat it as a stressed and vital natural resource. As per the draft, water right will be available for all. Also, water as a primary human life sustainer will be given priority over other applications such as industrial uses or agricultural uses.
Desert Eagle-II Exercise concluded
On 3rd June 2016, Desert Eagle-II exercise was concluded which was a part of the bilateral exercises being conducted between UAE AF (United Arab Emirates Air Force) and IAF (Indian Air Force). It was second such exercise in this series. The primary exercise was air combat and was conducted for 10 days. The base of operations was Al-Dhafra Air-Base in Abu Dhabi. The exercise was a high level success despite the arid and hot conditions. In 2008, IAF participated in the first Desert Eagle-I exercise.
RG (Rajiv Gauba) Committee submitted report on Delhi Traffic Decongestion
On 5th June 2016, the RG (Rajiv Gauba) Committee submitted a report on the on Delhi Traffic Decongestion to the Ministry of Union-Urban Development. The report included 4 long-term strategies with the objective of ensuring a sustainable, safe, equitable, accessible, affordable, environment friendly and comfortable public transportation system across the city. These strategies included dis-incentivizing private vehicle usages, traffic and road safety, enhancing the institutional capacity, UMTA (Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority) and other measures.
