Nation-wide programme for promotion of breastfeeding launched


On 5th August 2016, nation-wide programme for promotion of breastfeeding was launched. JP Nadda, Union Minister for health launched the program. It is named as MAA (Mother’s Absolute Affection). The objective of this program is enhancing the practice of optimal breastfeeding. It will ensure adequate information & support to families, mothers and husbands. The budget for this program is INR 30 crore. Each district will receive INR 4.3 Lakhs for program implementation.


RBI forms TRC (Tarun Ramadorai Committee)


On 4th August 2016, RBI (Reserve Bank of India) formed TRC (Tarun Ramadorai Committee). This committee will look into various scenarios related to Indian household finance. Tarun Ramadorai will chair the committee. He is a Financial Economics professor from Oxford University. The committee will be represented by many financial regulators. These will be SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA and RBI. The objective is to benchmark current Indian household finance market across other world markets. It will also identify significant areas for change and growth. It will evaluate demands of the Indian households in the financial market scenario. It will also look into financial market deviations. The committee will submit a report by July 2017.


CSIR-CFTRI developed Nutrice Cream


CSIR (The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) and CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute) developed Nutrice Cream. The announcement was made on 4th August 2016. It is developed in consultation with DCICPL (Dairy Classic Ice Creams Pvt. Ltd) & Oleome Biosolutions at Bengaluru. It is a nutritional dessert enriched with Vitamin-E and Omega-3. The ingredients are taken from vegetarian sources. One serving will provide the omega-3 RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) for children. The ingredient used as omega-3 source is Chia seeds. Chia seeds have the highest Omega-3 fat content. Agro technology has been developed by CFTRI for using these seeds. Omega-3 is important for brain development.


Rio Olympics 2016 begins


On 5th August 2016, Rio Olympics began. It is the 31st Summer Olympics. The inaugural ceremony was held at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium. The acting President of Brazil Michel Temer declared the opening of the games. The declaration was also observed by Ban-ki Moon, UN Chief and Thomas Bach IOC Chief. This year’s Olympic cauldron was lit by Vanderlei D. Lima, 2004 Olympics marathon winner. The torch was brought by Gustavo Kuerten (noted tennis player). The program’s three major themes were diversity, garden and joy.


WBW (World Breastfeeding Week) 2016 observed


The 2016 WBW (World Breastfeeding Week) was observed around the world. Every year, this week is celebrated from 1st to 7th August. This year’s theme was ‘Breastfeeding: A key to Sustainable Development’. This theme raises awareness regarding the association between breastfeeding and SDGs (sustainable development goals). WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action), WHO and UNICEF together organized this week. The objective of WBW is promoting exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of child’s life. This improves the health, provides critical nutrients and protects from deadly diseases. WBW first started in 1992. At present, over 120 nations observe this week.
