Anurag Thakur elected as BCCI president


On 22nd May 2016, Anurag Thakur was unanimously selected as the 34th President of the BCCI (Board of Cricket Council of India). The selection was finalized during a SGM (Special General Meeting) held in Mumbai. Anurag will be serving as the President till September 2017. Thakur is an acting Lok Sabah BJP MP from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. At age 41, he becomes the 2nd youngest president of BCCI. In 1963, Fatehsinghrao Gaekwad was elected as BCCI Chief at age 33 becoming the youngest President ever.  Thakur will be succeeding Shashank Manohar who was elected as the first independent chairman of ICC on 12th May 2016. Anurag’s father is PK Dhumal, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister.


International Day for Biological Diversity 2016 observed across the world


On 22nd May 2016, the UN (United Nations) observed the IBD (International Day for Biological Diversity) for the year 2016. This year’s theme was ‘Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods’. The major objective of this theme was highlighting the significance of biodiversity in support development. The theme also highlighted that the biodiversity is a significant cross-cutting outline in the Sustainable Development agenda, 2030.  22 May has been declared as IBD as per the UN General Assembly’s resolution 55/201 and is being observed since 2000. The main objective of this day is to increase understanding as well as awareness regarding biodiversity issues.


Mukesh Ambani conferred with ‘Othmer Gold Medal’ for his Entrepreneurial Leadership


On 17th May 2016, Chairman and MD (Managing Director) of RIL (Reliance Industries Limited) Mukesh Ambani was conferred with ‘Othmer Gold Medal’ for his Leadership in the entrepreneurial sector. The award was given by the US based CHF (Chemical Heritage Foundation). CEO and President of CHF Carsten Reinhardt presented this honor to Ambani during the CHF Heritage Day occasion at Philadelphia, USA. Ambani was conferred with this award due to his significant entrepreneurial leadership that contributed in various significant landmarks such as expansion of the Indian PRI (Petroleum Refinery Industry), creation of Gujarat Jamnagar Refinery (World’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery) as well as path breaking initiatives across oil & gas explorations.


India launches its first reusable space-shuttle, RLV-TD from Sriharikota


On 23rd May 2016, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) launched its first reusable space-shuttle, RLV-TD (Reusable Launch Vehicle) from the Sriharikota spaceport, Andhra Pradesh. The operation was carried on a SRM (Solid Rock Motor) which weighted 9 tones. The design of the SRM was to blister slowly to support vertical movement of the winged body. After launching from Sriharikota spaceport, the vehicle glided back in the BOB (Bay of Bengal). The vehicle entered the atmosphere again after reaching 70 km height. The mission was termed as ‘Hypersonic Flight Experiment’ and lasted for 10 minutes. The RLV-TD (Re-Usable Launch Vehicle – Technology Demonstrator) is a new initiative towards TSTO (Two Stage To Orbit) fully reusable space-shuttle realization.  The total project cost for this experiment was around Rupees 95 cores and was almost similar as the US space-shuttle.
