UPSC IAS Preliminary Exam Syllabus 2016
- Paper I- General Studies (200 marks)
- Paper II- Aptitude Test (200 marks)
Now that we know the frame of the preliminary exam, let us catch these papers one by one.
Paper I- General Studies
The first paper under Preliminary Exam is for General Studies. This is a two-hour paper carrying 200 marks. The type of paper is objective and the marks in this paper determines whether a candidate will move on to the next level or not. Some of the key areas from where questions are asked:

All these sections compromise of 200 marks and a candidate needs to give his best to answer as many questions has he can. After Paper I is completed, candidates would sit for Paper II after an interval.
Paper II- Aptitude Test (200 marks)
The second paper under Preliminary Exam is for Aptitude Test. Like, Paper I, this is also a two-hour paper and carries 200 marks. An interesting feature of this paper is that it carries negative marking. For every wrong answer, a score of 1/3rd is deducted from the score of the candidate in this paper. Moreover, it is mandatory for candidates to score atleast 33% in this paper to qualify for the Mains. From the viewpoint of marks weightage, the score obtained in this paper is not considered while computing the score of the candidate for the next level.
