World Press Freedom Day
May 3 2016 was observed as World Press Freedom Day all across the world. The theme for this year was related to transparency in accessing information and accepting the fundamental freedom of every individual. The day also acknowledges the importance of three other events- Celebrating 15 years of new SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), 25th anniversary of Windhoek Declaration and 250th anniversary of first freedom law based on information. The day was established with an objective to promote liberty in Press and make information accessible worldwide.
Supreme Court orders all diesel cabs to be banned in Delhi from May 1
On April 30 2016, the Supreme Court of India has presented its view against extending the deadline of removing diesel based cabs from Delhi. As per the official notification, all diesel based cabs have been banned from roads in Delhi, effective from May 1 2016. The decision came after Supreme Court had earlier granted a month’s extension. The actual date of ban was from April 1 2016, but the same was extended by a month as per the request. The only exception to this ban are the vehicles of Delhi Jal Board & Delhi Police, who can use new diesel vehicle for their use, provided the engine capacity of the vehicle is not more than 2000 CC.
EPL 2016 Winners- Leicester City
On May 2 2016, Leicester City created history by winning the EPL (English Premier League) for the first time in its history of 132 years. The championship was crowned to Leicester City automatically when Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspurs drew a game 2-2. The draw obviously meant that the Hotspurs would have not been able to surpass Leicester City as it was 7 points ahead and leading the table.
RM Lodha Council formed to reform MCI
On May 2 2016, the Supreme Court of India decided to appoint a 3-member panel headed by RM Lodha, the ex-Chief Justice of India. The duty of this panel would be to keep a watch on the Medical Council of India and ensure that the operations are professionally been taken care of. The other two panellist are Dr. SK Sareen and Vinod Rai. The action was taken by the Supreme Court after incidents of corrupt practices were brought to the notice of the authority which previously prevailed in MCI.
Amendment Bill on Mines and Minerals gets passed in Rajya Sabha
May 2 2016 witnessed a major development in the mining sector of India as Rajya Sabha passed the amendment bill on Mines and Minerals. The new bill has already been passed in both the houses and hence, will now prevail as a law in the country, if the consent of the President is obtained. With this development, the mining industry of India will now need to comply with the amended rules. Some of the key areas under this bill are- mining lease, inclusion of limestone, iron ore, manganese ore and bauxite under notified minerals and power to state Government for approving mining lease.
