Odisha government launched BBSY


Government of Odisha on 7th August 2016 launched BBSY (Baristha Bunakar Sahayata Yojana). It is a special scheme for assisting elderly weavers. It was launched to mark NHD (National Handloom Day). As per this scheme, weavers who are 60 plus of age will receive INR 500 rupees monthly pension. Weavers who are 60 plus age will receive INR 800 rupees monthly pension. The objective of this scheme is improving the financial situation of more than 8000 weavers. The amount will be directly shared to beneficiary BA. During this occasion, Naveen Patnaik (CM) also shared many awards.


Union Government launched the Swachh Survekshan (2017)


Mr. Venkaiah Naidu (Union Minister-Urban Development) launched the Swachh Suvekshan program for 2017. It will assess & rank around 500 cities across the nation. The rankings will be based on sanitation levels as well as efforts from respective local urban bodies. It will also ensure that an ODF (Open Defecation Free) status. Activities such as toilet construction, citizen feedback & independent observation will determine ranking. Last survey was conducted across 73 cities by QCI (Quality Council of India). A web portal named ‘Swachhata App’ was also developed. A helpline portal named ‘Swachhta Helpline 1969’ was created. These will enable citizens to better associate with the Mission.


Manish Tandon elected as CSS Corp. CEO


On 6th August 2016, Manish Tandon was elected as CSS Corp. CEO. It is a global tech-support firm. He will be working as the firm’s whole-time Director & CEO. He will be succeeding TG Ramesh. After this, Ramesh will be working as strategic advisor & Board’s non-executive Director. Tandon is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur & IIM Bangalore Gold Medalist. He worked with Infosys building for 20 years. After that Manish worked in the business management and client management roles. He is currently heading Healthcare & Life Sciences at Infosys.


Mahim Bora, eminent litterateur from Assam passed away


Mahim Bora, eminent litterateur from Assam passed away on 5th August 2016. He was suffering old-age problems. He was of 92 years age. He died in Assam’s Nagaon district. He is a Sahitya Akedemi and Padma Shri winner. Some of his literary works are Kanthanibari Ghat and Bohubhuji Tribhuj. He completed his MA from GU (Guwahati University).


International Day- WIP (World’s Indigenous Peoples) observed


On 9th August 2016, International Day- WIP (World’s Indigenous Peoples) was observed. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Right to Education’. The day was first organized on 23rd December 1994 by UNGA. UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) adopted the resolution 49/214 for observing this day. The day also marks UN’s first meeting for Human Rights protection and promotion. After the day’s inauguration, 2 international decades were launched between 1994-2004 and 2005-2014. They were themed ‘A decade of action’ & ‘Dignity’ respectively. The objective was improving international coordination. This cooperation is required for enhancing indigenous people’s life. It will help in developing areas like human rights, health & education, social & economic development.
