2nd NHD (National Handloom Day) observed


2nd NHD (National Handloom Day) was observed on 7th August 2016. It was a national-wide celebration. The main event took place at Varanasi, UP. Awards such as SKA (Sant Kabir Awards) & NHA (National Handloom Awards) were given. It was also celebrated across state level. 200 plus handloom clusters across the nation celebrated this event. The day was first celebrated on 7th August 2015. It was unveiled by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. During this event, the ‘India Handloom’ brand was also unveiled. The objective of this day is generating awareness about the significance of this industry. It also aims to highlight handloom’s contribution in nation’s socio-economic development.


Telangana launched WRIS (Water Resources Information System)


Telangana launched WRIS (Water Resources Information System) on 6th August 2016. It is a unique WRIS from the state government. It will assess accurate water reserves across thousands of reservoirs and tanks across Telangana. A MoU was signed between TID (Telangana Irrigation Department) and ISRO for sharing of satellite data. The NRSC center of ISRO will be setting up the system. It will help in planning new irrigational projects & maintain transparent governance. If successful, this WRIS will be accepted and implemented by other states too. This will ensure nationwide water management.


China launched Tiantong-01- First Mobile Telecommunication satellite


On 6th August 2016, China successfully launched Tiantong-01. It is China’s first mobile telecommunication satellite. The satellite launched from the XSLC (Xichang Satellite Launch Center), southwestern China. This will be followed by more sets of geostationary satellites into the orbit. This was China’s first homemade mobile telecom satellite. It is a significant step in the nation’s SII (space information infrastructure). CIST (China Academy of Space Technology) designed the satellite. China Telecom operates the satellite’s ground services. It will be operating in a GEO (geosynchronous) orbit. It will generate services for Middle East, China, Africa and related areas.


Vijay Rupani sworn as CM of Gujarat


On 7th August 2016, Vijay Rupani was sworn-in as the 16th CM of Gujarat. Rupani will be succeeding Anandibhen Patel. Patel was the senior-most member of cabinet in the Anandiben Government. Also, Nitin Patel took oath as the DCM (Deputy Chief Minister) of Gujarat. The oath was administered by OP Kohli, Gujarat governor. The event took place at the MG Conference Hall at Gandhinagar. There were 20 ministers who took oath. 9 Ministers were cabinet ministers and rest 16 ministers were MoS (Ministers of State). Ten ministers from Anandiben administration were dropped.


Narendra Modi launched Mission Bhagiratha


On 7th August 2016, Narendra Modi launched ‘Mission Bhagiratha’ in the state of Telangana. It was launched at Medak District’s Komatibanda Village. The objective of this scheme is providing safe and pure drinking water available to all. Mr. Modi spoke about important projects under this scheme. This included an NTPC Thermal Power Plan at Ramagundam. The fertilizer plant in that area will also be revived. Other projects will include establishment of a Health Science university & Railway line.
